Classic rock powerhouse Heart is embracing their roots. In this case, that means plans for their next album are taking them back to the days before all-things-digital became the norm.

Although the group has been touring for a while, they have also been logging some studio time in between dates to work on a new album, which is being produced by Ben Mink. Mink also worked with lead singer Ann Wilson on her solo album Hope & Glory.

Little is known about the new album beyond what Nancy Wilson recently revealed to Spinner. There are said to be ten songs pretty well finished up, with a couple more to work out before the album is completed. The group hopes to release it in the spring, but what’s most interesting is Wilson’s statement revealing that “We’ve been approaching it on a really human level. There’s not a digital construct anywhere.”

<img style="margin: 0px 20px 10px 0px;" title="2009 ASCAP Pop Awards - 22 April 2009 -Hollywood, California - Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson. 2009 ASCAP Pop Awards held At The Renaissance Hotel.
In addition, the recording is a return to a more old school methodology where all of the musicians are playing at the same time in the same space. “We are putting up baffles and playing together at the same time: drums, bass and guitars, all at once, in the same room, looking at each other and jiving off each other, so that it’s really a conversation in process,” Wilson adds.

Hearing this news can really raise expectations for fans like myself who consider Heart’s debut album, Dreamboat Annie one of the greatest rock albums of all time. That’s due, in part, to the quality of the recording, which, needless to say was 100% analog back on the mid-1970’s. It was recorded on an old Ampex MM1000 16-track tape machine (for the engineering geeks out there), which the technical crew somehow coaxed an astoundingly beautiful mix from.

For my money, it’s one of the best recordings I have ever heard, and I’m hoping that the folks in the control room can at least come close to the exemplary work done by Patrick Collins and Rofl Henneman, who are credited for the mastering and engineering on Dreamboat Annie.

If I may borrow some terminology from the world of sports, I envision my Heart “fantasy band” in the studio with some or all of the original musicians from the early days, with the result being something that really sounds like material from the 1970’s version of the group.

That may be the sound they are shooting for with this new album, and I’d love for them to hit the bull’s-eye, but as other enduring groups have discovered, the old magic can be very elusive. That is especially true when only two original members remain in the group.

I don’t want to come across as a wet blanket, but even though this analog-only thing sounds like a cool idea, for this fan, Heart will always be that group that blew my mind with Dreamboat Annie; not the band I’ve seen and heard more recently which the enormously talented Wilson sisters have been fronting.

I’m content to leave it at that. I know there are still legions of loyal fans out there who still love the group in its current form, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and wrap this up by saying I will let the new album speak for itself when it is released.

Could it be that Jon Anderson and Yes have parted company for good? When the band made the fateful decision to embark on their 40th anniversary tour with a stand-in while Anderson was recuperating from a respiratory ailment, it may have been the beginning of the end for the group called Yes that was fronted by a fellow named Jon Anderson.

Initially, Anderson was initially quite upset about the group’s plans to soldier on without him, and made no secret of it, posting his thoughts on his personal website. The rest of the group reacted in a way that seemed to suggest that the presence of Benoit David – The “understudy” who was chosen to take Anderson’s place – was only temporary, and that Anderson would be welcomed back to the group when his health would allow it.

Since that time things seemed to have evolved. Although there have been no public statements from Anderson regarding his official status as a member of Yes, a recent announcement from another member of the group suggests that they may have split with Anderson for good.

Chris Squire, the only continuous member of the group since its founding, has recently announced that the group plans to tour next year in its current form; in other words without Jon Anderson. There is also talk of a new album. In addition to what Squire told Plant Rock Radio back in October regarding their plans for a tour and album, he also revealed that both Benoit David and Oliver Wakeman are now official members of the band. “This is now Yes,” Squire was reported to have said.

With regard to the status of Jon Anderson, Squire indicated that the group – in its current form – has his blessing and that they are still friends. Anderson is reportedly not well enough to endure a full tour schedule with Yes and has decided to continue his solo efforts. Squire adds that he hopes he will have the chance to work with Anderson again some day.

The 2010 tour begins in February on the 4th at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH. The tour then works its way west and winds up the month with a show in the 28th at the Sunset Cove Amphitheater in Boca Raton, FL. Not a bad place to be in February.

A quick look at the Yes discography shows that Jon Anderson played a major role in creating a very significant quantity of the group’s material, including some of their best-known hits like “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Roundabout,” and “Owner of A Lonely Heart.” This, it would seem, gives Anderson a financial stake in whatever activities the other members are engaged in as long as they continue to use material that Anderson wrote or shares credit on. Not being a lawyer or music company executive, this is just speculation on my part, but it seems like a reasonable conclusion.

Whether Anderson and the rest of the group ever reunite – even for a single gig – remains unclear. Things often change quite unexpectedly in the music industry, so I think we can safely assume that almost anything is possible.

I’m not sure it was ever really clear if the latest Aerosmith rumor regarding Lenny Kravitz was something that was actually being talked about within the group, or was just another crazy rumor that swept the classic rock world after a comment from retired A&R exec John Kalodner, who has worked with Aerosmith in the past.

<img style="margin: 0px 0px 25px 20px;" title="2009 Voodoo Experience - Day 3 - NEW ORLEANS - NOVEMBER 01: Lenny Kravitz performs at the 2009 Voodoo Experience at City Park on November 1, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
During a conversation with Rolling Stone magazine, Kalodner commented that he thought Kravitz was the only guy that could make a go at replacing Steven Tyler. Whether that actually resulted in any talk between Kravitz and Aerosmith is unknown at this point, but apparently the rumors gained sufficient traction to prompt Kravitz into action, and he put the kibosh on them Monday.

Kravitz jumped on the internet and logged into his Twitter account to let the world know he will not be joining the ranks of Aerosmith.

“As much as I am flattered that Aerosmith’s camp would consider me to front the band, Steven Tyler is a family friend, and no voice could ever take the place of his. I hope the band stays together. They are classic. Lenny”

So another rumor bites the dust. It is kind of cool that Twitter seems to be evolving into the new press release channel for celebrities and rock stars. It’s great that they can go straight to the fans instantaneously and not have to rely on the media to communicate with fans. Does anyone even trust the media any more?

With this latest Aerosmith rumor in the trash and Steven Tyler staying mum on the details of his plans for the future, fans will just have to wait for the next rumor to surface. I’m betting they will not have to wait too long.

Medical issues continue to plague Aerosmith and I’m starting to wonder if the group has had some kind of curse placed on them or something.

In the most recent unfortunate episode, frontman Steven Tyler slipped and fell off a rain-slicked catwalk during a dance routine that was intended to entertain the crowd after the group’s sound system failed about half-way through their performance.

Tyler is reported to have landed on top of a couple of fans, and being that they were performing at the Sturgis motorcycle rally, let’s hope that Tyler toppled onto a couple of burly bikers. There was no report of injuries in the crowd, so perhaps that was indeed the case. On the other hand, if one had to pick a particular rock star to fall off the stage onto them, Tyler would not be a bad choice.

Tyler was airlifted to a local hospital but seemed to be in good spirits before he was whisked away, and was said to be joking with the doctor who was attending to him after the fall. The singer suffered neck and shoulder injuries but they are believed to be minor. It has been reported by Tyler’s daughter Mia that her dad is going to be OK.

This is the second time Tyler has been injured during a show during the current tour. Back in June, he tore a muscle in his leg while performing at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut which resulted in postponements for a number of shows while he recovered.

There is no word yet on whether this latest incident will interrupt the tour schedule again, but one certainly cannot fault Tyler for his efforts to entertain fans. Despite his age and other recent injuries, the energetic performer seems to be putting everything he’s got into his performances.

The show must go on! It appears that Aerosmith has decided to take those words to heart and resume their tour tonight in Atlanta. The group has had to postpone several dates due to an injury to frontman Steven Tyler that he sustained during a show in Connecticut and resulted in a torn leg muscle.

With Tyler apparently in good enough shape to take the stage again, another member of the veteran rock group will be sitting out for a while. Bassist Tom Hamilton is said to be recovering from “non-invasive surgery.” It is not clear how long Hamilton will be out of action, but during his absence, Aerosmith friend David Hull will hold down his spot until Hamilton is fit to return. Hull is also a member of The Joe Perry Project.

In a strange revolving door-like scenario, guitarist Brad Whitford will return to the fold tonight in Atlanta while Hamilton bows out. Whitford has had to sit out of the current tour due to a potentially serious head injury he suffered while exiting from his car. Fortunately, Whitford recognized the seriousness of his injury and sought medical attention and underwent surgery to alleviate the problem.

Steven Tyler’s daughter Mia reported yesterday that her father was in a cast as a result of his leg injury. I guess the fans in Atlanta will find out of Tyler is well enough to put on a show that measures up to his usual energetic routine or whether he will have to scale things back a bit to avoid re-injuring himself.

The number of illnesses and injuries that have plagued Aerosmith in recent years may be unmatched by any other group to date, and may have some fans wondering if this will be the last opportunity to see the group live.

Three members sidelined due to medical issues at the very start of a tour is quite extraordinary and might have some of them thinking about saying so long to life on the road. Perhaps that’s jumping to conclusions at this point, but unless their luck takes a turn for the better where medical issues are concerned, it may be tough for them to think about more touring in the future.

The month of August will give Scorpions fans in a few select U.S. locations a chance to see the group perform with some home-grown rockers they have teamed up with for their short visit.

The current tour schedule has them teaming up with Sammy Hagar for three shows, Alice Cooper for one show and also Ratt for one show.
The group is still promoting their most recent album release, Humanity: Hour 1, so fans can probably expect to hear a lot of material from that one, as well as some Scorpions classics from the past.
